Golden Milk for a Cold Winter’s Night

Yield 2 cups

Lightly spiced, slightly creamy, this warming golden milk drink is similar to chai but without caffeine. It’s packed with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties thanks to the black pepper, turmeric, and ginger. A touch of honey adds subtle sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups dairy or non-dairy milk
  • 1 3-inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 1-inch piece unpeeled fresh turmeric, sliced thin
  • 1 1-inch piece unpeeled fresh ginger, sliced thin
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • ¼ teaspoon whole back peppercorns
  • ¼ teaspoon whole cloves
  • Dash of ground nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

In a medium saucepan, whisk together the milk, cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, honey, peppercorns, and cloves, and set over medium heat. Bring to a low boil, reduce the heat, and simmer until the flavors are married, about 10 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve into mugs and serve garnished with a dash of ground nutmeg.
