Crème Brûlée French Toast
Regular shoppers may recognize this recipe as a staple in our breakfast hot bars. After popular request, we're sharing the recipe so you can enjoy it at home! It's French toast like you've never tried it before, made with a buttery, maple-brown sugar caramel base, thick slices of bread, and a creamy custard. Yum!
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 2 cups light brown sugar
- ⅓ cup maple syrup
- One loaf of bread, such as Breadsmith honey white
- 12 eggs
- 1 cup whole milk
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon sea salt
- Powdered sugar, for dusting, if desired
Instructions
In a saucepan, melt the butter, brown sugar, and maple syrup, and stir to combine. Grease a 9 x 13 pan and add the butter mixture. Arrange the bread slices over the top and set aside.
In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, and salt. Pour evenly over the bread, cover, and chill in the refrigerator overnight.
Bake uncovered at 375° for 50 to 60 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Dust with powdered sugar and serve hot with apple compote, if desired.
