Deliciously tangy citrus tiramisu is the perfect no-bake dessert. Blood oranges reach their peak sweetness in winter, making them the ideal ingredient for this decadent dish. Can't find blood oranges? Any in-season citrus fruit will go great, from Cara Cara and navel oranges to tangerines, mandarins, and more!
Zest the three oranges into a medium size bowl. In a separate mixing bowl, whip the egg whites and half of the sugar with a pinch of salt until soft peaks form. Scrape the whites into the bowl with the zest and gently combine. No need to wash out the mixing bowl.
In the same mixing bowl, whip the mascarpone, heavy cream, egg yolks, vanilla extract, and remaining sugar until peaks form. Fold the egg whites into the whipped mascarpone mixture.
Juice the oranges until you have 1 ½ cups juice and pour into a shallow bowl. Working one at a time, dip each ladyfinger into the juice mixture for 2-3 seconds (don't keep them in too long or they'll get soggy and fall apart). Place them on the bottom of an 8x8 or 9x9 baking dish in an even layer until the bottom is covered. Cut any ladyfingers with a serrated knife before soaking if needed to create an even layer.
Spread half the mascarpone mixture evenly over the ladyfingers to the edge of the pan. Repeat with the remaining ladyfingers and mascarpone mixture so there are two layers.
Chill for at least 8 hours. Sprinkle with orange zest and serve.
*Consuming raw or undercooked eggs may increase your risk of foodborne illness.
**Find mascarpone in the deli cheese section by cheese curds.
