Lakewinds is committed to strengthening and promoting equity in the local food system. Together with others in the local food community, we have helped to create programs designed to offer emergency support to local farmers struggling as a result of COVID-19 and to encourage consumers to swap non-local food purchases for locally grown options in order to strengthen our local food economy.
Local Emergency Assistance Farmer Fund (LEAFF)
LEAFF provides access to new markets for local farmers, with an emphasis on equity in the food system. Through this program, unsold produce is purchased from local farmers and redistributed free of charge to local food access organizations. During the pilot phase, the focus is on supporting Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) farmers.
Local Food is Essential (LFIE)
We believe local food is essential. It is essential to our local economy, to the health and security of our communities, and to the environment. Unfortunately, many local farmers, food makers, and producers are facing uncertainty and reduced markets as a result of the current pandemic. Find out how you can contribute to building a stronger local food system, and learn ways you can share and deepen your commitment to supporting local makers and farmers through the Local Food is Essential campaign.
