Founders Fern & Dale Peterson
Ferndale Market is a third-generation family farm raising all-natural, pasture-raised turkeys that are free range in the warm months. Turkeys raised in this humane way are not only tastier, but tend to be higher in omega-3s and lower in saturated fat, so they’re even better for you.
Grass Run Farms
Ryan & Kristine Jepsen
The Jepsens have spent six years raising grass-fed, pasture-raised beef, and they also help other farmers expand by coordinating wholesale arrangements with restaurants and grocers. Their cows are antibiotic- and hormone-free, are raised and harvested humanely and fed only vegetarian feed. Beyond the animals, they also work to control atmospheric carbons and develop healthy soil.
Hidden Stream Farm
Eric and Lisa Klein
Hidden Stream Farm is Lakewinds’ primary supplier of pasture-raised, grass-fed beef and pork. Committed to no-antibiotic, no-hormone, no-MSG meats, Hidden Stream Farms is a newer farm in Elgin, MN. Not only has Hidden Stream Farm made a big difference for Lakewinds’ consumers, Lakewinds has made a big difference for Hidden Stream in terms of finding those customers and given a pathway to growth.
Kadejan got its start in 1989 as a processor of meats for area farmers and hunters. Today, Kadejan raises chickens humanely—cage free, small flocks, free roaming and without antibiotics or hormones. Minimal processing and slower inspection rates allows Kadejan to harvest the meat with much lower risk of contamination.
Larry Schultz Organic Farm
The Schultz Organic farm is one of the few that can proudly say they haven’t used herbicides since the 1950s, making his farm a rare multi-generational organic farm. He produces his chickens, eggs and turkeys the way his parents taught him: without antibiotics, hormones, fertilizers or pesticides.
Star Prairie Trout Farm
Nate Wendt and Jeff Taylor
Star Prairie, WI
Star Prairie farms trout (and has been doing so for over 150 years) by taking advantage of the ice-cold, swift-moving, impeccably clean Star Prairie ponds. Trout are raised from eggs and take nearly two years to grow to their adult size—and only an hour to reach the Twin Cities.
